WV1C VX-7R Information

This is a little info and some links concerning the Yaesu VX-7R HT, in case you're thinking about getting one.

This is a great little HT, in my opinion, and you can have lots of fun with it. It really is submersible, but who wants to try that? I bought one on eBay for almost what you'd pay new, though I some accesspries came with it. Luckily the seller had taken very good care of it, and it is just a great little radio. It's even nicer if you use the free VX Commander programming software so that you can take your time learning the complex menu functions at your leisure. I use this program with no problems at all running MacOSX 10.4.5, Virtual PC 6 with Win 98, and using a Keyspan USB->Serial Adapter. The program is slow to enter data in under VPC, so I edit my CSV files in Excel and then import them. VX Commander reads from and writes to the whole radio memory in a few seconds.

Anything and everything else you would want to know about this HT is here at the VX-7R Modifications Homepage and if not there, then on the VX-7R Yahoo Group Mailing List.

I also added a Maldol MH510 to replace the rubber duck antenna, and it lives up to its hype! Also, since I drive a leased car at the moment, I am using it as a mobile rig for the repeaters. I stick it in a cell phone holder clamped to the dash with a suction cup, I use an external speaker/mic, and a mag mount quarter wave antenna that has thin feed line that you can slam the door on. It works great considering the limitations, and the battery gets me through my two way commute with ease.

If you just so happen to live in Connecticut, and you've just got a new VX-7R, then you might want to download MY CSV FILE for VX Commander. It is the whole frequency memory of my current VX-7R configuration. It includes over a hundred repeaters on all the bands, as well as a couple of Guilford emergency frequencies, and also the ATIS, Tower, and Ground frequncies for Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) which I fly out of. It also has some common simplex frequencies and some satellite offsets. I make no guarantees about the accuracy nor completeness of any of it, especially as I compiled it from a number of sources, but it has gotten me on the repeaters and it's a great start, earier than doing all the work from scratch!
